The application for CantaRode International Choral Festival 2018 has started. Choirs from all over the world who want to participate in this festival, can sign up now. CantaRode 2018 takes place from May 10th – 14th 2018 in the city of Kerkrade in The Netherlands.
The International Choral Festival CantaRode is held for the 4th time next year. The festival consists of a competition, workshops & masterclasses, concerts in the region of Kerkrade and a public event. Choirs with a capacity of 12 to 40 members can participate in the festival. These can be mixed choirs or women’s or men’s choirs. The festival is intended for amateur choirs, which also includes choirs from universities, conservatories of music high schools.
The festival starts on Thursday May 10th with an opening concert, where all participating choirs can present themselves. On Friday May 11th and Saturday 12th a league of two rounds will take place. During the first round, each choir must sing a capella at least four pieces from different periods. This also includes a work of choice from a composer from the country of origin of the choir.
The next day, the choirs can perform a program of their own choice in the second round of the league. During this second round the use of instruments or soloists is also permitted. An international professional jury reviews all performances. During the final concert on Sunday, May 13th, the winners will be announced. At the festival, the participating choirs can win prizes ranging from 250 to 1,500 Euros. In addition to these prizes for the three best choirs, there is also a prize for the best conductor, a prize for the best performance of the piece form the country of origin and a public prize.
Kerkrade and region
Kerkrade is a small town in the south of the Netherlands, nearby Maastricht and close to Aachen in Germany. Regional Kerkrade is known as the ‘city of music’. Other international festivals like the World Wind Music Contest and the Orlando Festival for chamber music are also held in Kerkrade.
The competition of CantaRode will take place in the recently completely renovated Parkstad Limburg Theather in Kerkrade. The other activities will take place in several other locations in Kerkrade – like the 12th century Abbey of Rolduc – and surroundings, including parts of Belgium and Germany. Especially on Saturday evening and Sunday morning there are lots of opportunities for concerts in the region.
Enrollment for the CantaRode International Choir Festival can be done until December 15th 2017.
